AARP Helps Locals with Food Stamps

Eligible individuals can seek help with filling out forms with the AARP Foundation Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Woodstock Public Library.

As the holiday season gathers momentum, the AARP Foundation is stepping up its campaign to enroll older Georgians in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/Food Stamp program by extending its enrollment opportunities in Cherokee County this month.

Approximately two-thirds of eligible older Georgians, anyone 60 or older, are not enrolled in the program, which provides additional resources to struggling households.

“There’s a definite need at all levels,” said Janie Walker, associate state director, outreach, at AARP Georgia. “After years of recession, many households are faced with the choice of buying food or paying bills.”

Backed by the AARP Foundation, the program has helped more than 350 Georgians apply for the program since the drive began in September. The campaign has focused on counties in the Atlanta region and will expand into other selected counties in 2012.

To apply, applicants are asked to bring a Social Security award letter, or proof of residency such as a bill with their address on it, or an ID card, and information about income and expenses. It typically takes two to four weeks for an application to be processed. A list of eligibilty requirements can be found here.
