It's National Pet Day! Share Photos of Your Pet

Don't forget to tell us your pet's name and why you love it.

It's National Pet Day! A day devoted to people's love for their furry friends. In honor of today, Patch is inviting you to share photos of these special little souls.

To get started, Dixie (see picture) is a four-year-old Boxer-Pit Bull mix. I love her because she loves me unconditionally and can always help me feel better after a stressful day.

She got her name Dixie because when she first arrived at home, she ran really fast around the living room, which reminded us of Dixie Speedway!

I love Rosie because she's full of personality and makes me laugh.  - Ann Marie Quill, Editor of Johns Creek Patch

Callie and Marley are always affectionate and willing to snuggle with anyone!  - Justin Ove, Editor of Canton-Sixes Patch

Frankie, a 19-year-old chocolate point Siamese, is named after ol' blue eyes, Frank Sinatra, because of HER blue eyes. I love her because she's been the best companion all these years and is the sweetest cat ever. - Liz Kennedy, Editor of Cumming Patch

Bart was one of those rescue dogs who "was going to be put down when the weekend's over," according to the Humane Society Volunteer. Taking care of him keeps me a little bit more connected with real life after spending a day on the computer. Even when I've stayed away for far too long during the day, he's always glad to see me come back home.  - Bob Pepalis, Associate Regional Editor and Editor of Alpharetta-Milton Patch

National Pet Day was founded by Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige, and is sponsored by the Animal Miracle Foundation & Network.

The day was created to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters all across the nation.

According to Pet Day USA , it's estimated that approximately 16,000 pets die in U.S. shelters every single day.

Visit the Cherokee County Humane Society for ways you can give back and help the homeless animals of our community.
