My mother had so many talents, including an ability to paint lovely pictures. She was never fully satisfied with her various still lifes and landscapes. But I think they are beautiful. As a young child, I would sometimes set up an easel by the window next to her and imitate her paint strokes, her mixing of colors. Unfortunately, I did not inherit one dab of her talent.
Still, I love the idea of painting. I love the smells, the texture of the canvas, the feel of the brush in my hand. But I simply don’t know what to do next as I sit in front of that canvas and hold that brush.
Thanks to the recommendation of my friend Lynne, I think I found a solution! The Funky Paintbrush, located in Downtown Woodstock, is an art studio that offers unique classes for wannabes like me.

For $25, you enjoy a two-hour class, led by supportive instructors who help you complete an acrylic painting that is ready to take home at the end of your session. Each class focuses on a Painting of the Day, so that the instructors can guide you step-by-step as you and your classmates paint a common scene or object. Paintings vary and include brightly colored florals, landscapes and funky designs. Every Painting of the Day is completely “doable” for novice painters or low talents such as me.
Everything is provided for your two-hour session—paints, brushes, an apron, easel and a 16x20 stretched canvas. All you need to bring is your beverage of choice. After all, a glass of wine just might help summon your muse. You are also welcome to bring snacks or munchies.

Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome if space is available. The studio seats about 40 people per class.
