CarMax Volunteers Make a Difference

CarMax volunteers help the Elm Street team with summer projects.

It's not often that you're lucky enough to have a new group of people - most of whom you've not even met before -  enter your building for the sole purpose of making things better for your organization and your patrons.  And if they're energetic, self starters as well, that's just fantastic.

Now we have a fabulous bunch of Elm Street volunteers - regulars and ones who come and go with the different shows - and we are so grateful for them for the many, many things they do for Elm Street like building sets and costumes. They know and like what we do; they know us personally and like us enough to help out.

So when CarMax Cares month rolled around this year, it was Elm Street parent and CarMax employee Andrea Jeffrey who arranged for us to benefit from their volunteer program. (Her daughter, Carys, is appearing in Peter Pan this month, by the way). Not only were we offered a few hours of volunteer time and attention, but we also will receive a $2,000 donation from the CarMax Foundation. It's downright overwhelming, I tell you.

So what did they do over here? Well, our nice, large rehearsal/meeting rooms had some dark colors on the walls that just made them seem smaller and well, dark. With , we really wanted to bring our campers into freshly painted, light, bright rooms. We also needed many bulbs replaced in ceiling light fixtures and some organizing done in one of our terrific new office spaces.

When asked why she wanted to bring her team here, Andrea said, "I nominated Elm Street for a Carmax Cares event because Ms. Grooms and Siobhan Brumbelow work tirelessly to keep the arts alive and bring quality theater and educational programs to our community."

And the CarMax volunteers told us  they "liked to make a difference and support the Arts in our communities" and "Elm Street was so so appreciative of our efforts, and it felt great to make a difference".

So thank you CarMax for your community mindedness, your generosity and your smiling team members.

Wow, what a great way to kick off the summer!
