Woodstock's FreedomFest Combines Patriotism With Family Fun

Celebrate Independence Day with a slew of events in the city of Woodstock on July 4.

From the city of Woodstock

The city of Woodstock is hoping Mother Nature cooperates with this year’s July 4 FreedomFest, Parade and Fireworks.

The day starts off with a Freedom Run 5k race and Fun Run, which starts at 7:30 am. More information and registration can be found on the Woodstock Freedom Run's website.

Following the race at 10 a.m., will be the city's annual July 4 parade, which will run down Main Street from the old Walmart on Highway 92 to Woodstock Elementary School on Rope Mill Road.

This patriotic inspired parade offers something for everyone including floats, music and, of course, lots of candy.

Leading the parade this year will be the AFJROTC Color Guard from Etowah High School under the direction of Major John D. White, USAF (Ret.). They will be followed by the Grand Marshal, Marine Corps League and American Legion.

Our Grand Marshal this year is Chester Reeves, an Army Air Corps, and WWII Veteran that was involved in the Burma Campaign. Many know Chester as he lays the wreath at the city’s Memorial Day Ceremony each year. As always, many different Boy and Girl Scouts troops, packs, and dens will be there showing their patriotism. Be sure to cheer on your favorites for our Best Floats contest each year.

Although the local high school marching bands are unavailable to play in the July 4 parade, you can look forward to seeing them at the Dec. 6 Christmas Jubilee Parade of Lights.

“When asked to perform at the July 4th Parade, many schools decline due to the students being on vacation and the unlikelihood of having enough volunteers to make up a true band,” said Marybeth Stockdale, special events coordinator for the city of Woodstock. “We do, however, have some very good home school and church bands that will be participating again this year.”

Join us in The Park at City Center immediately following the parade for the July 4 FreedomFest. The Kona Music Band will be performing all day in the gazebo. There will be a moonwalk along with games and activities for the kids.

A delicious cake walk will be a hit for both young and old. Vendors of all types will be there for you to browse. Food vendors will be on site, sure to satisfy the biggest appetite.

What better way to end your day than with a Fireworks show. Beginning at dusk, the fireworks display will be held at the Target shopping center on Highway 92 and I-575.

A fireworks traffic map can be found on the city's website

Parade and Vendor applications will be accepted until June 27. Please remember that political and commercial entries are limited to two vehicles only.

Food vendor spaces are no longer available. Applications, road closures, and parade map can be found at www.WoodstockParksandRec.com
