In Memory: Claud Barnes, 2002 Woodstock Citizen of the Year

A lifelong resident of Woodstock, Barnes was a veteran of World War II and served on the D-Day Omaha Beach Normandy Invasion in June 1944.

The following obituary was submitted by Woodstock Funeral Home:

Claud Barnes died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at the age of 102. Barnes was a lifelong citizen of Woodstock. His current home on Arnold Mill Road is on the site of the farm where he was raised by his parents Claud and Emma Rusk Barnes.

Barnes was a veteran of World War II having served on the D-Day Omaha Beach Normandy Invasion in June 1944.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Merritt Barnes, a son, James Merritt, brothers, James Newton Barnes, and Miller Davis Barnes of Woodstock, and nephew, William Barnes of Huntington, West Virginia.

Barnes is survived by his nieces, Millicent Barnes Fox and Catherine Barnes Price, nephew, Alan Rusk Barnes and several great nieces and nephews. 

Barnes was a member of Woodstock United Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 16 at Woodstock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Margaret Adams officiating.

Barnes was placed in the mausoleum at Cherokee Memorial Park.
