Obituary: John Dobson Kidd, 90

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Kidd served as a squadron commander in the Mediterranean during the Cold War.

John Dobson Kidd, 90, of Woodstock passed away on Aug. 28. Born to Elbert S. Kidd and Ethel Dobson Kidd, Captain Kidd was raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated with the class of 1945 from the United States Naval Academy.

Following his class's early graduation in 1944, he served the last year of World War II in the Pacific aboard the heavy cruiser USS Pittsburgh.

Captain Kidd went on to flight school and spent many exciting years as a carrier jet pilot, seeing duty as a Squadron Commander in the Mediterranean during the Cold War.

After service with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Captain Kidd retired in 1974 as the director of the Office of Naval Research in Boston. His retirement years were spent traveling and enjoying his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John is predeceased by his son, John D. Kidd, Jr. and is survived by his wife, Murial H. Kidd; son, Kevin R. Kidd; daughter, Kimberly K. Michael; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Roswell Funeral Home on Tuesday Sept. 3.
