UPDATE: Multi-Vehicle Wreck Injures 4 in Cherokee

A four-vehicle wreck on Cumming Highway at Beavers Road in Macedonia resulted in the closure of the state highway for nearly four hours.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a multiple vehicle accident on S.R. 20/Cumming Highway in Macedonia that injured four people in Cherokee County.

At around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, crews with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and the Canton Fire Department responded to a multi-vehicle accident on the state highway near its intersection with Beavers Road.

First responders arrived onto the scene to find four vehicles involved in the accident: a tractor trailer, a Ford F-250, a Chevrolet Silverado and a Toyota Avalon, Cherokee Fire said in a press release.

Incoming calls from the scene indicated the 15-year-old driver of a white Ford-F-250 was entrapped in the truck, the agency added.

Georgia State Patrol spokesperson Tracey Watson said preliminary reports indicate a pickup truck traveling eastbound on Cumming Highway clipped the back of a car that slowed for traffic "in an attempt to avoid collision."

"After clipping the car, the pickup truck crossed into the westbound lanes and struck a tractor trailer head on," Watson added. "After impact, the tractor trailer struck another pickup truck."

Firefighters "worked hard to remove the male driver from the heavily damage truck so he could be life-flighted by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta," said Cherokee Fire spokesperson Tim Cavender, referring to the teenager.

The teenager was conscious and alert and had multiple injuries to his lower extremities, Cavender stated.

The teen's 77-year-old grandfather, who was a passenger in the truck, was later transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, Cavender stated.

Watson added driver of the tractor trailer was taken to Northside Hospital-Cherokee, and the driver of the other pick-up truck was taken to North Fulton Hospital in Roswell. Watson said charges are pending in the accident.

All lanes at the scene were blocked and traffic in both directions had to be re-routed. All lanes of Cumming Highway reopened just before 7 p.m. Wednesday.
