Off-Duty Officer Charged With DUI

Austin Reese Chadwick of Woodstock was arrested Saturday evening for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident involving a tractor trailer.

An off-duty Cobb County officer is facing legal troubles of his own.

Cobb County Police on Saturday arrested Woodstock resident Austin Reese Chadwick, 23, and charged him with driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane and failure to report an accident.

While investigating a hit-and-run crash on S.R. 5, Cobb police discovered identification belonging to Chadwick inside a vehicle involved in the accident, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Chadwick allegedly left the scene of the accident, which forced Cobb authorities to reach out to Cherokee County officials to help them locate Chadwick. The officer allegedly called 911 from his home in Woodstock reporting he was injured and needed medical assistance.

According to the AJC, officers and paramedics treated Chadwick at his home for a leg injury. Officers detected a "strong odor" of alcohol on his breath, and Chadwick reportedly said he'd "really messed up."

Chadwick admitted to drinking, and did consent to a sobriety test, the newspaper reported. Records show Chadwick was booked into the Cobb County Jail just before 6 a.m. July 19, but was released around 12:30 p.m. after posting a $1,600 bond.
