Cherokee To Rule on Next Step Ministries' Plans

Next Step Ministries wants to remodel a building in Woodstock they would like to utilize as its future home.

The Cherokee County Commission tonight will review a request from a nonprofit organization to remove restrictions on a building they are eyeing as a possible new home.

Commissioners during their meeting tonight will consider a request by Next Step Ministries to remove conditions of zoning placed on the property they would like to renovate for a new facility.

The commission's meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the county administration building in Canton. The meeting will be preceded by a work session, which gets underway at 3 p.m.

The property sits at 7709 Turner Road in Woodstock and was rezoned from residential to what's now known as neighborhood commercial during the 1980s. The conditions of zoning stipulated the building could only be used as a music school or a drapery shop and the building should not exceed 40 feet by 100 feet in size.

It also ruled the facility should be built similar to the style of other structures in the area. Baker wants to remove those conditions so she could adapt the building to suit the organization's needs.

Residents who live in the area were concerned that if the conditions were removed, it could open up the possibility of heavier uses being permitted in the area.
