Renovations Force Woodstock DDA To Find New Home

The owners of the Johnston Building on Main Street terminated its lease with the Downtown Development Authority as they prepare to renovate the space.

Plans to perform renovations on a historic building on Main Street has forced the Woodstock Downtown Development Authority to find a new home.

The DDA's offices, which also house Main Street Woodstock and Woodstock's Office of Economic Development, had to relocate from the Johnston Building at 8632 Main Street to office space behind Foxtale Book Shoppe at 105 East Main Street.

Brian Stockton, the city's economic development director, said the building's owner, the estate of Elizabeth Johnston, decided to move forward with renovating the building, so the estate had to terminate the leases. Johnston passed way in December

The Woodstock Downtown Development Authority was paying $700 per month on the lease, Stockton added. The DDA on Thursday signed off on the move during its regular monthly meeting.

The Johnston Building also housed Digital Media Group and LKT Sports, which announced last month it was closing due to the "uncertainty" of its lease. Digital Media Group is now a home-based business in Woodstock, but the company is actively seeking an office to lease.
