Mill Creek Middle School sixth-grade student Sathvika Narasimhan placed runner up in the 53rd Annual Georgia Association of Educators State Spelling Bee.

The sixth-grade student and 19 other spellers from across the state battled it out on Friday, but could not surpass the efforts of first-place winner Sumedh Garimella, a 14-year-old student from Hull Middle school in Gwinnett County.

He will now represent Georgia in the Scripps National Spelling Bee Championships in Washington, D.C. in May.

With her second place win, Sathvika, 12, took home a second place trophy. She also won $500, and had a choice of either a Nook or Ipad Mini along with a $50 Amazon gift card and a Merriam-Webster dictionary.

The students competed fiercely until Sumedh and Sathvika were the last two contestants left standing. Sathvika proceeded first. She was given the word "ptomaine" to spell, but she spelled it incorrectly — leaving off the "p."

Sumedh was given the word, which he spelled correctly, and proceeded to spell "enterorrhagia" correctly that propelled him to first place.

Sathvika earlier this month placed second at the Georgia Association of Educators' District 2 Spelling Bee to qualify for the State competition. She advanced to the district competition after she won the Cherokee County School District's competition in January.
