More CCSD Students Pass State Writing Test

The Cherokee County School District saw improvements in how its 11th grade students performed on the Georgia High School Writing Test.

Ninety-nine percent of 11th grade students who took the exam for the first time in the fall passed the exam, a slight increase from 98 percent of students who were tested in fall 2011. 

The district had 2,145 students who took the two-hour exam for the first time last school year.

The district's average surpasses the state's average of 97 percent. 

Students are required to pass the exam in order to earn a regular high school diploma. It's given three times a year so students have several opportunities to pass the exam before graduation.

"This exciting news comes on the heels of SAT and ACT results putting CCSD students in the lead statewide for academic achievement, which is a testament not only to their hard work, but also to the dedication of teachers, support staff, administrators, parents and everyone in our community who advocates for our students and our public schools," Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo said in a statement. 

Here are the results broken down by each of the district's high schools:

• Cherokee: 99%
• Creekview: 100%
• Etowah: 98%
• River Ridge: 99%
• Sequoyah: 98%
• Woodstock: 99%

CCSD's average students with disabilities who took the exam also outperformed the state. Eighty-eight percent of those students passed the exam, compared to the state's 72 percent.
